A planned superhighway, Interstate 69, running from Canada to Mexico will pass through West Tennessee. Weaver & Associates, LLC conducted a red flag survey of the proposed corridors that run between Dyersburg and Millington, Tennessee. The survey began in the fall of 2001, ended in early 2002, and covered approximately 158 miles. A literature and records search was conducted prior to the fieldwork in order to identify potential high probability areas of site locations. The project area was divided into 34 study areas, and three teams of archaeologists conducted systematic surveys within those study areas. Fifty-one previously unrecorded sites were identified and 17 previously recorded sites were revisited. Our goal was to provide our client, Haworth, Meyer & Boleyn, Inc. with information on the distribution of significant archaeological properties within the corridors in order for them to be able to make an informed decision on which route to choose and what adjustments to the route would need to be made. |
